Types of Hydraulic Cylinder Seals

2024-11-15

In many construction styles, hydraulic cylinders contain a sealing gland with a specific type of hydraulic seal to prevent the pressurized oil inside the cylinder leaking from the interface between the connecting rod and the cylinder head. The advantage of the sealing gland is that it is easy to remove to replace the seal.

Sealing gland typically contains primary seals, secondary seals or buffer seals, bearing elements, scrapers, and static seals. In some cases, especially in small hydraulic cylinders, the rod gland and bearing elements are made from a single monolithic machined part.

The hydraulic seals are the same as the cylinders themselves, are  based on cylinder working pressure, cylinder speed, working temperature and application to specify. The seals used on hydraulic cylinders are dynamic and must be able to withstand the wear and tear of the piston rod telescopic.

Seals are usually made of nitrile rubber, fluororubber or polyurethane and so on. And seals are best suited for use in low-temperature environments. At high temperatures, hydraulic seals made of fluorocarbon are a better choice. Metal seals are also available, often using bronze as the sealing material. Wipers are typically made of polyurethane and are used to eliminate contaminants such as water, dirt, and dust, which can cause serious damage to cylinder walls, rods, seals, and other internal components.
